A Battersea schoolboy has created a new board game designed to educate people about the pitfalls of gang life and what it’s like to grow up in his local area.

Life is What U Make It is based on the Battersea estate Winstantley and focuses on young people tempted to join a gang.

14 year old Osmond Gordon-Vernon has lived in the estate his whole life and wanted to show kids and locals how ‘living on the right side of the law is the better option.’

When players reach part of the board game called Gang Member Strip, they must choose whether or not to live a life of crime. Those who choose gang life come across a number of obstacles that those who do not, avoid.

Gordon-Vernon said: “The game asks you what you want to make of yourself.

“It shows that being a gang member might sound exciting, but that choosing to live legitimately bring about much better outcomes.”

Gordon-Vernon created the game as both a tool for young people as well as a way to show adults what life is like on the estate. Based on his own life experiences, he invented the game as part of a Battersea Arts Centre scheme called The Agency.

Your Local Guardian reports that last December the young inventor secured £2,000 in funding to make the game.

He added: “My ambition is for it to be played in my community, in schools, youth clubs and homes.

“I would also like it to spread into other communities and for it to eventually go global.”
