Wibbly Pig and The Gruffalo now join the licensed classic characters at Rainbow and retailers can look forward to an array of gift and toy launches early next year.
Wish Films’ Wibbly Pig began life on the pages of a picture book written and illustrated by Mick Inkpen. More than 1.7 million copies of the books have sold in the UK.
Rainbow’s new Wibbly Pig gifts and toys will retain the simple, imaginative elements of the original books whilst still being educational.
The Gruffalo book has sold over four million copies sold since its publication in March 1999 and has translations in more than 40 languages. The story, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, tells the story of a mouse’s stroll through the deep dark wood.
Magic Light Pictures’ half-hour animated special - The Gruffalo - debuted Christmas day 2009 on BBC1 and will be a highlight of Nickelodeon’s schedule this autumn half-term. There will also be a second film - The Gruffalo’s Child – for Christmas 2011 on the BBC.
Rainbow’s new Gruffalo products will encourage adventurous and imaginative play, and are ideal for inquisitive pre-schoolers.
Anthony Temple, Rainbow Designs’ managing director, said: “We are delighted to welcome Wibbly Pig and The Gruffalo to our host of licensed characters. Both of these properties have acquired the status of modern day classics and fit perfectly with our existing licensed ranges.
“The products in development are extremely exciting, innovative and original. They are not only fun but practical too and we look forward to launching them later this year.”
