Rain boosts Amazon game sales

Amazon sees games sales rise by a third as wet weather keeps kids indoors.

The UK's washed-out summer has driven customers indoors and seen a spike in the sales of board games, according to online giant Amazon.

Sales of games since June 2007 have risen on Amazon.co.uk by a third compared to June 2006 as Brits resign themselves to a summer spent indoors.

Games like Top Trumps, Rubik's cube and Scrabble have been among the top sellers. Only the appearance of Swingball in the number 10 position suggests any sort of optimism for the coming months.

"Having put up with the rain for such a prolonged period, it seems Brits have finally heeded the weatherman's warnings that summer will simply not arrive this year." commented Paul Sanders, Amazon.co.uk's head toys buyer . "The rise we have encountered in the sales of indoor games just goes to show that Brits have resigned themselves to months of hiding from the rain playing Top Trumps rather than engaging in outdoor activities this summer."

Warm Easter boosts toy sales

UK retail sales were up 4.6 per cent in April on a like-for-like basis according to the British Retail Consortium. This was due to Easter falling in April this year compared to March in 2008, along with warmer sunny weather this April, while last year it was cold and wet.
