Nukotoys has unveiled the first offerings in its 'Nuko-powered' games line, which merges physical toys with mobile games.

The firm - which is based in Silicon Valley, California - has launched Nukos, which are collectable trading cards that spring to life when tapped to the screen of an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

There are currently two ranges available - Animal Planet Wildlands and Monsterology.

The Nuko cards are recognised by the game apps when tapped to the screen, instantly importing the contents of the card into the games. Packs of three cards are priced at $1.99 and seven cards are $3.99. Each pack contains Rare, Uncommon and Common cards.

There is also a Premium Collector's Box Set containing 28 cards for $19.99.

"We're creating intelligent toys for kids that magically interact with an iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch," said Doug Penman, founder and co-CEO of Nukotoys. "We see this as an incredible opportunity to pave a new path for the toy industry, and believe the entertaining and educational content from Discovery Communications' Animal Planet and Candlewick Press' Monsterology is perfect for introducing this engaging new blend of virtual and physical play."

Rodger Raderman, fellow founder and co-CEO, added: "More and more kids are interacting with iPads at younger and younger ages. To meet the rapidly changing preferences of these digitally fascinated kids, we're bringing not only Silicon Valley technology and creativity to the toy industry, but also a change-focused process that puts kids first.

"By merging toys with these devices, we're introducing the concept of toys as service."
