Digital table-top game specialist Nomad Games is seeking new licences in the board and card game sector.

Nomad Games is an independent video games developer and publisher and has enjoyed huge success with the PC and mobile versions of classic Games Workshop board game Talisman.

The Cheshire-based company is now looking to extend its portfolio by taking other card and board games to digital formats.

“We learned that board gaming was having a revival and while classics like Risk, Catan and Carcasonne were already on mobile, there are plenty of other good board games that could make the leap,” said managing director Don Whiteford.

“Many cardboard game makers want to go digital and after speaking to the CEO at Days of Wonder (Ticket to Ride) Eric Hautemont, we discovered that there is huge synergy between physical and digital versions. That’s good for everyone and we aim to be the best at what we do. On GooglePlay, Talisman has sat solidly at the top of the board game charts in the US and the UK since day one.”

Whiteford and his team are, however, keen to stress that digital versions of board and card games are not substitutes for the originals, but rather that they can complement and boost sales of the physical products.

“Let’s be clear – a digital version of a board game doesn’t replace that physical, ‘mates in a room experience’ and nor should it,” added Whiteford.

“What it does do is provide fans with a way to improve their game and enjoy playing when it’s simply not possible or convenient to take over the kitchen or dining room for an evening. Judging by our Steam forums, an awful lot of our customers have played, or do play, the physical version of the game.”

Nomad Games will be announcing licensing agreements for a number of other classic board games later this year. However, it is also keen to talk to board and card game licensees about the opportunities afforded by taking their products to digital formats.
