Topps is launching a set of Mars Attacks story-based trading cards.

The Mars Attacks: Invasion cards, due this October, will pay homage to the popular sci-fi set from 1962 and "take the property into exciting new territory".

63 cards will be designed and the set will be divided into themed subsets that combine to tell the story of an alien apocalypse.

Original 1962 Mars Attacks trading cards will also be randomly inserted into packs.

Series editor David Waldeck said: "Topps hasn't done a set like this in more than 20 years.

"It's a return to the days when trading cards hooked audiences with incredible imagery and imaginative storytelling."
