Sales of drones over the Christmas shopping period have helped the High Street electricals specialist Maplin to 2.3 per cent lift in like for likes.

The retailer has reported that it saw three main peaks over the festive shopping season, Black Friday, the week before Christmas and the post-Christmas sales.

Over the course of the season, Maplin offered customers a full week of sales over Black Friday, slashing prices by over 70 per cent. It also increased stock levels by over 200 per cent on popular product ranges.

As a result, online sales between November 27th and January 2nd rose 3.3 per cent, reports Retail Gazette.

Maplin has declined to offer a total sales figure, but reports that sales of drones as well as CCTV equipment emerged as the leaders in generating revenue for the retailer over the period.

Earlier this week new research revealed that the value of the global commercial drone market is expected to jump by 84 per cent on last year to $481million.

Elsewhere, RC toy manufacturers and drone specialists have predicted that 2016 will be the year of the drone.

“Last year we continued to grow in the drones market,” said David Deustch, CEO of drones specialist, TopRace.

“Over the course of 2015, drones became more popular and more affordable. The market is booming for us and it will continue into 2016.”
