Gifted six year olds from Victoria Primary School have become published authors.

The Leeds pupils won the Hallmark Story Buddies national literacy competition with their 200-word story 'Bigsby Gets a Pet Mouse'.

This will be published in time for Christmas to accompany the Bigsby interactive storybook buddy plush toy.

The winning 1A Van Gogh class fought off tough competition from hundreds of UK and Ireland school children aged between five and seven years old. An overwhelming majority of the public voted for the story on Facebook.

Victoria Primary School’s book, ‘Bigsby Gets A Pet Mouse,’ will be available online from December 1st at www.hallmark.co.ukpriced £3.

50 per cent of all proceeds from the book will be donated to the school.

Class 1A teacher Carmen Ingham said: "We are just over the moon with this win. The whole class, including myself, loved every minute of this competition; it really has brought to life the children’s verbal and written storytelling skills – what an excellent start to their school years."

One of the judges, and Head of Emotions at Hallmark, Emma Bragg, commented: “Congratulations to Victoria Primary School and all the children involved – they should be extremely proud of themselves. Victoria Primary School was a worthy winner, fitting perfectly with the story buddy gang of books."

One of the authors, six year old Luke Rea of ‘Bigsby Gets a Pet Mouse’, added: “Bigsby has made school lots of fun, and we’re really happy that we’ve won. Some of my classmates even got to read our story on the radio and Mrs Ingham said we all get a gold star for writing our storybook."

The initiative was launched by Hallmark Cards and supported by education advisors and the Confederate of British Industry (CBI), to complement the school curriculum.

The inspiration for the competition followed a heart-warming letter from Amber, a little girl with learning difficulties who created her own story to go with the Bigsby story buddy.
