Kids may soon be able to digitally design their own loom bands before having them 3D printed in-store.

Digital developer, Black Pepper Software is currently working on a mobile app that will enable kids to design their own loom band pendants, which can then be 3D printed in a high street shop.

The idea is that a retailer will be able to purchase the technology and whitelabel the application that could then be used by consumers.

The initiative is part of design agency, Black Country Atelier’s plans to drive traffic back in to the high street retailer.

BCA is hoping that the technology – allowing retailers to also offer the service via its website - will hit the high street this year.

3D printing is expected to be the hot technology of 2015, according to analyst firm, Gartner, who believes worldwide shipments of 3D printers will rise 98 per cent.

Retail Week reports that BCA chose the popular loom bands as a testing ground for the new technology after conducting market research in to top-selling products of 2014.

“The next phase for us is to gain further attention and develop a range of commercial partnerships,” said Mitesh Patel, BCA’s chief creative officer.

“We are aiming to attract a retail partner, add a payment function in to the process and use the app to drive traffic from online and back in to store, the best of both worlds.”
