After dinner games may leave a slightly different taste in your mouth this Christmas as ITV has given the nod to a Bushtucker Trial Challenge board game.

Based on the channel’s reality TV show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, the board game will challenge players to down a variety of treats including crickets and mealworms in order to win points.

The game has been developed by a 23 year old bug hungry inventor, Ben Bartlett, the brains behind a successful line of insect-flavoured snacks called Bush Grub.

Having received approval from the TV studio, Bartlett now aims to have 10,000 editions of the game produced and on retailers’ shelves in time for Christmas.

The game will retail at £19.99 and will feature an array of flavours to compliment the traditional Christmas fare, including salt and vinegar crickets, barbecued mealworms and scorpion lollies.

“[The game] can be played while watching I’m a Celebrity or with frineds and family at any other time because it’s a really social game,” Bartlett told Kent Online.

“It should be available online within a month.”

Bartlett has been selling his insect treats for four years, using insects farmed for human consumption.

“We sent bush tucker goody bags to all of last year’s I’m a Celebrity contestants,” he continued. “But none of them contacted us to say if they liked it or not.

“In Holland, they make flour made from ground crickets for people with nut allergies. It goes in to making cakes and biscuits. Crickets taste like peanuts, so in this way, you get the nutty taste without the reaction.”
