Hobbycraft has been declared the winner of The Crown Estate's seventh annual urban business award.

The award celebrates businesses that display stand-out contribution to the communities in which they operate, and that make significant efforts to reduce their impact on the environment.

The firm impressed judges with a host of initiatives including a national charity partnership with Together for Short Lives.

The charity has raised £100,000 since October 2012 for children with life threatening and limiting conditions.

Hobbycraft was also praised for its community engagement programme, which enables colleagues to engage in volunteer work in schools, cart groups and community organisations around Hobbycraft stores.

The prize awarded to the firm includes a £5000 grant from The Crown Estate to be spent on either research or an associated community project.

Paul Clark, director of investment and asset management at The Crown Estate, said: "Hobbycraft has been extremely proactive in driving not one, but a whole range of initiatives which will improve the environment around its craft business.

"We were very impressed that the organisation has achieved such a lot in the last year, especially in relation to its new charity partnership with Together for Short Lives.

"I congratulate Hobbycraft and thank them and wish them every success in the coming year."

James Yates, property director at Hobbycraft, said: "Our links with together for Short Lives, local communities and the Scouting and Girl Guiding movement is very important to all of us at Hobbycraft and we are all delighted and proud to be recognised with this award from such a large and well respected organisation as The Crown Estate."

Hobbycraft is a tenant of The Crown Estate at a number of its out of town shopping schemes namely Altrincham Retail Park, Queensgate Shopping Park in Harlow and Crown Point in Leeds.

They will also be opening a new store at Aintree Shopping Park in Liverpool in Spring 2014.
