Hertfordshire indie closes doors after 40 years

Riders Toys in St Albans will close next month due to low footfall and the decrease in public spending

James Pinkham, who took over the family business from his late father, said: “I know a lot of people will be saddened to hear about our closure, because seeing a shop as familiar as ours close is a shock.

“But the way people shop has changed and I’d like to clarify it has nothing to do with my landlord hiking up the rents, it’s the economy. Footfall is low and it’s a real hard slog out there for people.”

Riders has been at its current location for four years, but has moved around various sites in the district since opening around 40 years ago.
