Gibsons celebrates 30 years of jigsaw puzzles

The company’s puzzle range has grown from six to 250 lines, with over 70 new designs joining the collection every year.

Gibsons is celebrating 30 years of jigsaw puzzles, after the firm’s chairman, Michael Gibson, first introduced jigsaw puzzles to the business.

Having successfully strengthened the Gibsons’ board game range through the late seventies and eighties, Gibson found a decline in the market as computers started to make their mark.

Thus in 1986, the team decided to launch its first range of photographic jigsaw puzzles that depicted scenes of Britain.

“The jigsaw puzzle industry was a tough market to join at the time as it was dominated by companies such as, Waddingtons, Arrow (Milton Bradley) and Falcon,” said Michael Gibson, grandson of the Gibsons founder, Harry Percy Gibson.

"However, Hasbro bought Waddingtons in 1994 and decided to suspend all jigsaw puzzle production. This gave us the opportunity to approach ex-Waddington artists such as Mike Jupp, and work with them on various projects, which built our brand and reputation considerably.”
