The First LEGO League competition arrived at Birmingham yesterday, as the latest regional event of the technology competition took place at the University of Birmingham.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology is the UK and Ireland partner for First LEGO League, and the competition has been designed to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills for students in science and technology.

The League sees youngsters aged beteween nine and 16 working together in teams and exploring a given scientific topic before planning, programming and testing an autonomous robot to solve several missions.

The teams have ten to twelve weeks during the autumn term to complete and test their entry before they compete in a regional tournament, the latest of which took place in Birmingham on January 7th.

The winners were pupils from Boreatton Scout Group, based in Shropshire.

“It was a fantastic competition and there so much talent on show on the day," Barry Brooks, president of the IET, told Birmingham Mail.

"The designs were of a very high standard.”

The remaining regional tournaments are in:

  • Manchester at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre on January 7th.
  • Edinburgh at the University of Edinburgh on January 11th.
  • Newbury at National Instruments on January 11th.
  • Ireland in Galway on February 8th.
