The global popularity of Fidget Spinners has sparked a bout of political paranoia among Russian diplomats who believe the craze is a move ‘to control the masses.’

The playground craze has found itself at the centre of raging debate in Russia after PolitRussia’s editor in chief declared the toy as a ‘plot by the opposition to zombify kids using political technologies.’

Ruslan Ostashko appeared on Rossiya 24 for a special report on the devices where he was joined in the sentiment that Putin’s opposition were behind the popularity of the fidget spinner within the country.

The paranoia has stemmed from a Fidget Spinner seller attending a recent political protest under the banner “Spinner from Navalny”. Parallels have since been drawn between the spinners in question and Russia’s prominent anti-corruption activists.

Otashko told the reporter that ‘this was an obvious ploy to pull children over to the dark side politics,’ citing that “those who understand political technologies, they understand very clearly that this simple thing is controlling the masses.”

Russia’s consumer protection agency has announced it will investigate the claim.

“Taking into consideration the anxiety among the community of parents and teachers, Rospotrebnadzor, in co-operation with child health research institutions, will study the effect spinners are having on children, including the possible negative impact,” said a spokesperson.
