Card game Exploding Kittens has made Kickstarter history as the crowdfunding site’s third-most backed project ever.
The campaign aimed at bringing the game that challenges players to do battle with kittens, explosions, laser beams and sometimes goats, has come to a close, having secured a whopping $8.8 million in funding.
The project launched on Kickstarter last month with the hopes of raising a more modest $10,000.
The tactical card game smashed past this goal in 24 hours when it launched on the crowdfunding site, and finished its month long stint on Kickstarter with over 219,000 backers.
The game was designed by The Oatmeal cartoonist Matthew Liman and Xbox designers, Elan Lee and Shane Small.
Exploding Kittens is a strategic version of Russian Roulette, explains Lee via the game’s Kickstarter page.
“On the very first day of this campaign, we hit our funding goal. That was a big deal. But after that, the campaign stopped being about money, and started being about a community,” they wrote in an update to backers as the crowdfunding campaign ended.
“We decided that everything we did from that point on would be to celebrate you guys, and help you celebrate each other. In the last 30 days, you’ve broken a lot of records, but we wanted to highlight our favourite one: you made this the most fun Kickstarter to run of all time.”
Backers can now expect to receive their copies of Exploding Kittens by June this year.
