Cracking Christmas for Tesco

No huge surprises as Tesco has this morning announced a strong Christmas trading statement, with non-food products including toys, games and electronics enjoying a record year.

The supermarket giant has revealed that group sales, excluding petrol, increased by 9.9 per cent in the six weeks to January 6th.

Like-for-like sales excluding petrol increased by 5.9 per cent, slightly higher than the rate of growth reported in Tesco’s third quarter period.

“The entire Tesco team worked hard to deliver an even better Christmas for customers than last year, including a record year in many non-food categories including toys and games, electronics and clothing,” said the statement.

Tesco.com, including Tesco Direct, also had a good Christmas, with total sales up by more than 30 per cent to over GBP150 million, accounting for nearly two million orders delivered in the six-week period.
