Compass tops box office

The Golden Compass opened as the top box office draw this weekend, with the UK its biggest market.

It drew an estimated £8.8m ($18 million) over five days in the UK.

France, Germany and Russia each provided about $5 million. Results in Spain - an estimated $10 million from 536 screens - benefited from a national holiday.

In its first weekend in US the film took the top spot with $26.1 million in receipts, according to early estimates.

Enchanted, a Disney family comedy about a princess transported to modern Manhattan, garnered $10.7 million in its third week, bringing its total gross to $83.8 million so far.

Nelvana?s UK office to close

Nelvana’s London office will close later this year as its parent company Corus Entertainment looks to restructure the firm to strengthen its position in the TV and content sectors.
