Board Game Club celebrated its first birthday in style last week, with game-themed cupcakes, cocktails and a roster of new tabletop titles.

The grown-up game night – established in March 2014 –saw Cartamundi provide exclusive limited edition Board Game Club playing cards, while Hasbro provided attendees with a special 80th anniversary edition of Monopoly.

The birthday bash attracted its usual crowd of inventors, games brands, the gaming public and first-time attendees, including games designer Richard Heayes.

“The power of face to face gaming was clearly evident at Board Game Club last Thursday,” said Heayes.

“It’s face to face networking at its best. A beer, a good crowd and a great array of games.”

The event saw Esdevium’s Ben Hogg treat strategy fans to a demo of Terror in Meeple City, while Andrew Harman showcased his latest Kickstarter project, Sandcastles.

Further titles keeping guests and gamers entertained on the night included Coiledspring’s Lift It, John Adams’ Telestrations, Tactic’s Mexican Train, Rocket Games’ Pie Face, Esdevium’s Dobble and In A Bind, a popular title from inventor Bez Shahriari.

“The atmosphere was electric and the guest list was equally as powerful,” said co-founder, Lesley Singleton.

“People from big games brands like Coiledspring, Winning Moves, Cartamundi and Esdevium rubbed shoulders with the creative brains behind indie games companies like Yay Games, BabbleInk and Joluet Games.”

The Board Game Club team now promises an exciting year ahead, with more themed and brand specific nights.

The team has now launched a dedicated Facebook page to help continue relationships formed at the event.

“Friendships and partnerships are forming among the dice, cards and meeples,” added Singleton.

“So, we are facilitating that further now with a dedicated online community which we can also use to notify our members of the next events and relevant news within the sector.”
