The team behind a new London-based board game café has taken to Kickstarter in a bid to ensure its shelves are filled with as many titles as possible.

Draughts is scheduled to open in Haggerston this autumn with more than 500 titles in its library, along with locally sourced food and drink, beers, ales, ciders and wines.

The café’s founders and directors, Toby Hamand and Nick Curci, have already secured funding for the venture, but are now embarking on a crowd-funding project to make sure customers are offered even the most obscure board games.

“The Kickstarter funds will help make sure that the shelves are stocked with unheard of titles, that the final touches are added to the fit, and of course to create an initial membership base in order to hit the ground running,” said Curci.

With staff – known as Game Gurus – on hand to offer advice and recommend titles, Draughts will host various events throughout the year, including gaming tournaments, themed nights and open events for game designers to come and test their latest prototypes.

Draughts will also be running board game design workshops which will be proven by successful designers.

The first will be taught by James Wallis, designer of Once Upon A Time.

The café will feature a range of titles, including classics such as Monopoly, Risk, Cluedo, Chess and Draughts, alongside party games such as Dixit, Tabpp and Articulate.

“We have also invested heavily in new Kickstarter releases such as Brewcrafters, Chaosmos and Coup Reformation and we will continue to do so, as many of the most exciting developments in board gaming are emerging through Kickstarter,” said Hamand.
