Big Potato talks secret projects, festival touring and board game cafe dreams

ToyNews catches up with Big Potato's Dean Tempest to discuss UK wide tours, best sellers and the strength of the board game market.

How has the year been for Big Potato so far? What kind of growth have you experienced on last year?

2017 has been busy. The year has hurtled by with five new games in production and all the other to look after, too. To cope with the increase workload and maintain success, we have called in reinforcements.

We are now 15 potatoes strong. 

How have you guys seen the boardgame sector grow over the last year? What makes it such a popular category today?

In the old days, people would be fairly hapy with a new version of Monopoly or Risk for Christmas. Now they realise that there’s a world of innovative games out there to discover and they’re looking for the latest thing. 

What titles are driving the biggest sales for you guys this year? What will be the big hitters for the end of the year?

We have got a secret project which we can’t talk about too much, yet. But fingers crossed it will be big. Our other big sellers have been OK Play, Bucket of Doom and Obama Llama. 

What new titles have you got in the pipeline and how will they drive the continued success of Big Potato?

We have got five new games coming out in the UK and the US. The Chameleon won Best Party Game at the UK Games Expo and is getting a lot of love online so we’re hoping that will do really well.

The other new games in the UK are First Dates, based on the hit TV show, Colourbrain, a new simple family quiz game, and the secret project. 

What’s next for Big Potato in the gaming space?

Well, we have established a board game night at the Strong Room in Shoreditch and we have been touring the summer music festivals with our Big Potato Games Tent. We would love to own our own board game café for people to come along to when they fancy a game.

What does the future of the board gaming sector look like to you? Will it continue to surge in popularity?

It had better keep on growing or we will go bust. We think the force is strong in games for the foreseeable future.
