An independent toy and model retailer in Inverness is being forced to shut down over "astronomical" rent hikes in the area.

The Inverness Model Shop, a longstanding fixture of the local shopping area, has announced its plans to close at the end of next month after being hit with a 22 per cent increase in rent.

Store owner, Craig MacDonald took on ownership of the Model Shop in 2013, offering locals a range of remote control cars, helicopters and toy railways.

After 45 years of trading, the store will now close over what MacDonald has described as an ‘astronomical’ rise in rent.

MacDonald has criticized his local council for hindering local businesses.

“Since I took over the shop in 2013 we have seen very little evidence of the Highland Council supporting the business in the Victorian Market – and if anything making it harder for us,” he told the Press and Journal.

“My rent was to go up by 22 per cent and that was enough to make the business completely unviable.”

City leader, Councilor Ian Brown has said that the proposed rises were in line with other rental costs in the city-centre and has pledged to meet traders to discuss problems.

At over 60,000 square feet of retail space and interactive displays, The Big Shop (formerly Snetterton Park Models) has been in operation for 15 years. ToyNews talks to MD Trevor Warner.
