14 year old schoolgirl wins Airfix design competition for new Hawk model

A schoolgirl has won an Airfix competition to design a new Airfix Hawk model, raising money for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund in the process.

14 year old Heather Morien's design was selected from hundreds of entries from around the world and will now be turned into a model kit, available to buy next year.

A pupil at Cramlington Learning Village school, Morien said: "I am really happy, I never thought that I would actually win the competition. I mean just the thought of an Airfix kit with my design on it is mind boggling and I can't wait to see it in the shops. I also can't wait to go to the shops and be one of the first to buy it so I can add it to my collection.

"Next week I am starting my GCSEs, one of which is Graphics and Product Design, and this competition has given me some helpful experience in this area."

Darrel Burge, Airfix marketing manager, added: "Airfix wanted to extend our association with the RAF Benevolent Fund, and raise awareness of the charity and out links to it.

"Enabling someone to design their own kit, and raising even more funds for the charity, has proven to be a great way to engage people, and in turn allows us to provide a fantastic lifetime prize for our winner."

The Airfix brand has been a key supporter of the RAF Benevolent Fund or over four years and has developed specific models with the charity's distinct heart roundel, with a percentage of profits from the sale of these going to the charity.

The company has to date donated over £10,000 to the RABF BF.

Air Marshal, Chris Nikols, said: "There was a fantastic response to the competition with entries from as far away as Australia.

"It was a tough decision picking the winner, but Heather's fun design was very eye-catching and a greg way to promote the work of the RAF Benevolent Fund.

"Hornby Hobbies and more specifically their Airfix brand, has become a key supporter of the RAF Benevolent Fund over the years and we're looking forward to this new design in the shops next year."
