Hasbro has acquired Power Rangers, My Pet Monster, Popples, Treehouse Detectives and a series of other brands from Saban in a deal valued at £522m.

The purchase has been made as Hasbro spies ‘significant opportunity for Power Rangers across its brand blueprint,’ including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment.

The acquisition of the Power Rangers franchise will not only give a boost to Hasbro’s retail toy sales, but a lift to the company’s media production business.

Created by Saban founder Haim Saban, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a live action kids’ TV series about a group of teenagers that turn into superheroes. The series launched in 1993.

In recent years, Hasbro has sought to diversify its revenue away from making toys and action figures my moving into TV and film production. Its entertainment and licensing business made $285.6m last year.

The division only accounted for five per cent of Hasbro’s total group revenue, but was highlighted as Hasbro’s fastest growing unit.

“Power Rangers is an iconic brand built on a heritage of great storytelling and merchandising with tremendous upside potential when fully executed across Hasbro’s brand blueprint,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chairman and chief executive officer.

“Shortly after entering into our licensing arrangement, it became clear that now was the time to begin investing in unlocking Power Rangers’ full potential. We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire brand blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint.”

Power Rangers’ creator and Saban Brands founder Haim Saban will continue in a consulting role to ‘further guide our development of this valuable property for the next generation of Power Ranger fans.”

Saban said: “25 years after launching Power Rangers, I believe the future for this brand has never been greater.

“Hasbro’s leadership in innovation, storytelling and brand stewardship make it the perfect company to further develop the global reach and appeal of the Power Rangers property. I look forward to working with Brian and the team in the years to come.”

The Mighty Morphin Power Ranger Rangers TV show is currently in its 25 season, with nearly 900 episodes produced to date, airing in 150 markets worldwide.

The Rangers have starred in feature films, comics, books, games and other digital content.

Hasbro first made its move towards the Power Rangers brand back in February of this year when ToyNews reported that it had been named the property’s master toy partner.

The first toys are expected to roll-out in April 2019.
