Paramount Players is developing a new movie based on the iconic Hasbro doll-action figure range, Action Man.

The UK's answer to GI Joe is getting ready for his close up in a new film, penned by Paddington 2's Simon Farnaby, directed by The Muppets' James Bobin and produced by Hasbro.

Action Man may not be familiar to US moviegoers as they were essentially Hasbro's British adaptation of the GI Joe toys. The Action Man franchise has expanded over the years to include a multitude of characters and accessories.

Action Man has been adapted for screen on several occasions, albeit mostly within the medium of television. The first incarnation came in 1995 and mixed animation with live-action segments, running for a total of 26 episodes.

A second effort came in 2000 and utilised updated CGI animation while also placing emphasis on Action Man's civilian identity as a sports star.

An Action Man comic series was also produced with over 130 issues printed.
