Despite positive early reviews, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part has fallen short of box office expectations, opening this weekend to $35 million in takings.

The sequel movie to 2014’s blockbuster hit topped the chart with its opening figure taken from across 4,303 theatres over its opening weekend, but didn’t live up to Warner Bros’ expectations of $50 to $55 million in its domestic launch.

The film has received some very strong reviews but despite them, still rung in at nearly 50 per cent behind The LEGO Movie, the box office smash hit directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It fell behind the $53 million debut of the spinoff The LEGO Batman Movie in February 2017.

That said, it has outstripped The LEGO Ninjago Movie which opened to $20.4 million in September 2017.

Lord and Miller both returned to write and produce LEGO Movie 2, directed by Mike Mitchell, alongside the cast Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Charlie Day, Alison Brie and Nick Offerman.

Figures have revealed that the sequel’s opening weekend skewed male with 57 per cent and played younger than the 2014 film with 48 per cent of ticket buyers being 18 and younger.

The LEGO Movie 2 launched to 63 markets globally, where it totalled $18.2 million, making its global box office total for its opening weekend $53.2 million. It was beat offshore by the latest in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, The Hidden World which earned another $38.2 million from 46 markets for an early cume of $138.7 million.
