Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation opened to $44.1 million in the US this weekend, swooping into the number one spot in North America.
The Sony animated children’s adventure smashed its weekend rival, Dwayne Johnson’s action pic Skyscraper, which took only $25.5 million.
Overseas, Hotel Transylvania 3 likewise beat Skyscraper for the weekend with $46.4 million from 44 markets for a global cume of $100.2 million, including special Amazon Prime screenings in the US and early foreign grosses.
It even managed to do so amid the World Cup and Wimbledon final this weekend.
Costing $80 million to produce before marketing, Hotel Transylvania 3 follows Dracula as he takes a cruise with his friends, only to fall in love with the captain of the ship. The voice cast includes Adam Sandler, Kathryn Hahn, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, David Spade, Steve Buscemi and Mel Brooks.
Disney and Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp followed at number two with $28.8 million, falling more than 60 per cent in its second outing, one of the steeper declines for a Marvel Cinematic Universe title.
Least year, Sony and Marvel’s Spider-man: Homecoming tumbled 62 per cent to $44.2 million in its opening weekend.
