Companies reveal gender pay gaps

Government figures report that more than three-quarters of UK firms pay men more on average than women.

More than 10,000 companies with UK operations have published wage data, detailing the gender pay gaps that exist between male and female employees.

The median pay gap among companies who reported data was 9.7 per cent in favour of men, indicating that 78 per cent of firms pay men more than women on average. 14 per cent of firms pay women more.

8 per cent said they had no pay gap between men and women.

Notable toy firms listed include Habro, which reported paying women 11.1 per cent less than men, which is below the national average of 18.4 per cent. Women make up 45 per cent of higher-paid jobs at the firm and 61 per cent of lower-paid jobs.

The LEGO Company Ltd reported a larger disparity in pay, with women taking home 21 per cent less than male employees.

In the retail space, Smyths Toys reported a pay gap of 18.4 per cent in favour of men, with Toys R Us reporting the same result. Build-a-Bear Workshop reported paying women 16.2 per cent less than men.

The Entertainer had a much more positive result, with women earning just 2.2 per cent less than men.

Games Workshop was the only retailer in the toy space that reported a reverse gender pay gap, with women at the company earning 10.7 per cent more than the average man.

Finally, in the licensing space, Viacom, owners of such brands as Nickelodeon and MTV, reported that women at the firm earn 13.7 per cent less than men.

At BBC Worldwide, women earn 16.9 per cent less, while at Disney, female workers take home 15.8 per cent less than the average man. ITV Studios pay women 10.3 per cent less than the average man.
