Dantoy launches toy line made from recycled maritime materials

In 2018, Danish company dantoy launched its BIO-line, of products made from sugarcane; in 2020 it debuted its GREEN BEAN line –items made from the waste material generated by the toy company’s own production methods. Last year saw the launch of dantoy’s Take Back Strategy, under which the company collects damaged dantoy toys to turn them into brand new playthings.

Now, in 2022, dantoy has presented its newest line – Blue Marine Toys, a unique solution to ocean waste in which toys are made from recycled maritime materials.

“Sustainability is not just a trend – it’s our DNA,” says Marck Matthiasen, dantoy’s CEO. “For us, it’s about  being open and welcoming the use of new materials. It is a long and hard battle but here at dantoy it is a natural part of how we work and think.”

It’s estimated that more than 12 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the sea every year; 10% of this is maritime waste, such as nets, lines, and ropes. dantoy takes these waste maritime materials and, at its factory in Hobro, Denmark,  turns them into sand- and water-play toys, all in bright and appealing shades that are 100% unique and fully sustainable.

The Blue Marine Toys collection – which includes buckets, boasts and a dumper truck – features colours and shapes inspired by sand, water and corals. “It is exciting and challenging to make colour mixes from fishing nets that have a dark green colour as their base material. You have to think differently to achieve the different shades,” says Inge S. Knakkergaard, Quality and Environmental Coordinator, dantoy.
