Hasbro bridges cultural divides with fun new spin on Mahjong

Hasbro is introducing a modern spin on the classic game Mahjong, called Not Your Ma’s Jong, created by married couple Jennifer Guo and Adam Szakacs. Not Your Ma’s Jong helps celebrate and bridge their diverse cultures – Chinese and Jewish – with a fast-paced and fierce variation of the classic pastime.

When Jennifer and Adam’s grandmothers first met, they didn’t speak the same language but quickly learned they had a love and bond over Mahjong, inspiring this new version of the game. Previously released in Canada in 2020, and fully funded on Kickstarter in just 12 hours, Not Your Ma’s Jong has now launched in the US just in time for the holidays, and is available from most major retailers.

The game’s artwork offers a peek into the worlds of Jennifer and Adam’s Nai Nai and Bubbie, reflecting their cultures and playfully competitive friendship. Players play in rounds and race to collect cards and get the most tokens – which must be watched over “like Nai Nai would watch over a big pot of dumplings”.

The game is suitable for players of 13 and up, and is priced at $15.99.
