Fortnite, Street Fighter, and Lord of the Rings all coming to Magic: The Gathering

Wizards of the Coast has detailed a full slate of new Magic: The Gathering products, including crossovers with the Fortnite and Street Fighter franchises, scheduled to land at retailers in 2022.

Among a list of announcements, the team also revealed that the highly anticipated Magic: The Gathering animated series will be coming to Netflix in late 2022.

The roll-out will kick off with the release of Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair Drop Series, featuring collectable, specially curated cards. Fortnite will be getting two Secret Lair drops of its own, encapsulating in-game locations and characters.

Meanwhile, the Secret Lair x Street Fighter drop will feature classic Street Fighter characters such as Chun-Li.

Following an announcement from Wizards of the Coast earlier this year that the team will be exploring Universes Beyond – a means of enabling fans to play Magic: The Gathering in fictional worlds outside of Magic’s own, it has detailed the arrival of The Lord of the Rings: Tales from Middle Earth.

The new Universes Beyond series will allow players to battle for The One Ring with Aragorn, ride with Nazgul, scheme with Saruman, or journey into Mount Doom. Gandalf, Gollum, Frodo, and more will be a part of a Magic: The Gathering booster release in 2023 that plans to ‘immerse fans in Middle Earth.’

Universes Beyond will also see Warhammer 40,000 commander products land next year, with four decks featuring new art, new cards and reprints set in the world of Warhammer 40,000.

“Magic is the core of our business and the brand has never been bigger,” said Chris Cocks, president of Wizards of the Coast.

“From partnerships with pop culture touchstones like Street Fighter, Fortnite, and The Lord of the Rings to a Netflix animated series launching next year – there has never been a better time to be a Magic fan.”

Slated for 2022, the Netflix animated series is currently in full production. The series will not only bring together familiar Planeswalkers for Magic fans, but will also introduce new characters and will kick off a completely new story.
