PlayMonster UK sees ‘overwhelming’ response to My Living World Design a Bug competition

PlayMonster UK has been left ‘overwhelmed’ by the response to its My Living World Design a Bug competition, that saw the toy company whittle down entries from more than 800 primary school students to select its grand prize winner.

Suhaan from Warrender Primary School has secured first prize, winning for her school a visit from the TV presenter and naturalist, Nick Baker. The special guest and host of some of the UK’s best-loved wildlife programmes, including BBC’s The Really Wild Show and Springwatch Unsprung, will lead an assembly for pupils of the school.

Launched by My Living World and the award-winning website KiddyCharts, the Design a Bug competition asked pupils to create their own weird and wonderful insects, inspired by creatures they’ve seen in the school playground or local park.

To help schools get started, My Living World provided two free nature study kits and STEM learning packs to over 230 schools. Designed by Baker himself, the Ant World and Worm World kits aim to help kids build their own insect habitats. Teachers were then encouraged to bring the natural world to life further still by making use of the free My Living World KS1 and KS2 resource packs, free to download from KiddyCharts.

The competition saw PlayMonster also award four runners-up spots, rewarded schools with a selection of My Living World sets. Maxine from Outdoors School, George from Washingborough Academy, Chloe from Bowmandale Primary School, and Saffy from Mawnan Smith Primary School helped win their fellow pupils the kit selection.

Justin Clasby, senior marketing manager, PlayMonster UK, said: “It’s great to see so many entries in the Design a Bug competition. Creations ranged from hand drawn, clay insects, paper crafted bugs to computer generated designs.

“The effort by all school children has been amazing and shows the energy and passion that kids have for nature and insects. We have been overwhelmed by the response and will continue with more PR and Digital activities through the rest of the year.”

Part of PlayMonster UK, My Living World creates a series of nature study kits, allowing children to discover the wonders of nature at home and in the classroom.

KiddyCharts is one of the UK’s leading parenting and learning websites. Founded by Helen Neale, the award-winning site provides free activities and resources for parents and teachers around the world.
