Gibsons to donate £50,000 to UK charities including Alzheimer’s Society and Friends of the Earth

The British family-owned, independent jigsaw and games company, Gibsons, is to donate £50,000 to a string of UK and international charities as part of the firm’s wider corporate social responsibility initiatives, with money going to the Alzheimer’s Society, Friends of the Earth, and more.

The donation is being made following a successful year of trading for the firm best known for its popular jigsaw puzzles, who saw sales of which soar by 59 per cent over the course of 2020.

A total of £50,000 will be shared across eight charity organisations representing a variety of causes closely aligned with the company’s own CSR strategy, as well as being close to the hearts of the Gibsons team. Charities set to benefit from the donation include Alzheimer’s Society, Friends of the Earth, Jigsaw4U, Macmillan Cancer Support, Samaritans (Croydon and Sutton branch), Small Steps, The Toy Project, and Young Minds.

“Every year we donate a percentage of our profits to charity, as part of our social responsibility and commitment to giving back to society,” said Kate Gibson, managing director at Gibsons. “We have pledged to grow our fundraising year on year, through a range of initiatives, such as donating £2 to Samaritans for every Rainbow Heroes puzzle sold, and now this year’s incredible £50k being shared across important causes.”

The donation will be spread across the eight organisations. Gibsons will be making a charitable donation of £10,000 each to the Friends of the Earth and Alzheimer’s Research UK organisations. Both causes sit closely with the Gibsons ethos and its adoption of recyclable packaging for its jigsaws and games, as well as its range of puzzles developed with Alzheimer’s patients in mind.

Adam Scott, corporate partnerships manager at Friends of the Earth, said: “A massive thank you to everyone at Gibsons for this incredible £10,000 donation – it will support Friends of the Earth’s work to help secure a safe climate and thriving nature for everyone, everywhere.

“It is also great to see Gibsons taking responsibility for minimising its own impacts via its Green Game Plan, a good example of the action all businesses must take if we are to protect our natural environment.”

“We feel honoured to be benefitting from their generosity, and thanks to backing from wonderful organisations like Gibsons, we are closer than ever to bringing about life-changing treatments for dementia. On behalf of everyone at Alzheimer’s Research UK, a big thank you, we couldn’t do what we do without you.”

Meanwhile, both The Toy Project – a London-based community run initiative to support families in need – and Small Steps – a free service for families impacted by the Coronavirus – will each receive a £4,000 donation from the independent jigsaw and games specialist.

Jane Garfield, charity director, The Toy Project, said: “The support we’ve had in getting our Play Room up and running has been more than we could have ever dreamed of. With Gibsons donating £4,000 we have covered running costs for another three months on top of the 11 months already sponsored. We could not be more grateful. We look forward to hosting many ‘puzzle nights’ with Gibsons stunning puzzles.”

Anita Coppola MBE, head of Small Steps, added: “We’re delighted to receive a £4,000 donation from Gibsons. It’s generosity like this that really makes a difference – enabling us to keep offering a free service to all of our families.

“Our core community events fundraising stream has been massively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic – this donation will ensure that four of our Small Stepper children (and their parents) will benefit from five half-day sessions over five weeks; singing, playing, having fun and focusing on the positive whilst participating in stimulating activities to address all areas of their development. Thank you Gibsons.”
