An official Monopoly edition based on The Lakes, produced by Winning Moves UK, has proved to be a major success with UK board gamers, and is already heading for the Christmas number one spot, according to its manufacturers, a full three months ahead of the big day.
The game hit the shops in the early summer, at the height of the UK lockdown, and has now gone into a second print. Such is the popularity of the title, that a third print run hasn’t been ruled out.
The Lakes Monopoly brings the scenery of the UK beauty spot to the gaming space, swapping out properties such as Mayfair and Park Lane for Lake District landmarks such as Windermere, Coniston, Aira Force, Scafell Pike, and more. Of course, classic game pieces have also been swapped for the likes of a motor boat, a motor home, and an umbrella.
Kay Thompson, head of retail at Winning Moves UK, said: “The game was released in June during lockdown and has sold out. It has proved the perfect ‘play at home, stay at home’ gift, as we sold out completely to retail within a few weeks.
“We thought when it was released that there would be enough games in the shops to cover this Christmas, but we have now had to go on a rapid second print-run. A third one is a possibility too. If demand is anything like it has been, then come Christmas Eve it may well be that the only games left will be those on Santa’s sleigh.”
Sales of the game have not been restricted to the UK either, and according to the firm, The Lakes Monopoly has become a hit across the international markets, too.
Thompson added: “As everyone knows The Lakes is an international tourist hot-spot and whilst this year it has been pretty much locked down to the world the Monopoly game dedicated to the Lakes has flown all over the globe. So maybe it’s a case of ‘If you can’t visit it, then play it’.”
The game boasts more twists and turns from the game’s classic Monopoly London original than, well, a typical Lake District road as the property sites, the cards, and the tokens each get a flavour of The Lakes.
“This special official edition is a celebration of – and in effect a Love Letter to – The Lakes,” added Thompson.
The game is produced under official license from the Monopoly brand, owned by Hasbro. The game is available at WH Smith, Waterstones, The Works, Ryman and extensively available online, including on Amazon.
