Melbot Studios secures Kickstarter funding for AR kawaii pet care toy in 24 hours

Melbot Studios has joined the Kickstarter elite, having secured 100 per cent of its target funding in just 24 hours of its Melbits campaign going live on the crowdfunding platform.

The Spanish tech toy studio took to Kickstarter last month with a project to bring virtual and physical pets together with a collection of kawaii pets that utilise AR technology to deliver a play experience it says ‘is like blending Pokémon with Tamagotchi.’

Called Melbits POD, the new launch is a sensor filled toy that incubates and hatches a collection of virtual kawaii pets to a smart device through the completion of various tasks by its user. These tasks take place in the user’s physical surroundings.

Game play sees users tasked with a timed mission to be completed with the toy in the real world, and away from the screen. If the mission is successful, it will unlock a new character for the virtual collection, allowing kids to caree for it, customise it, and play with it in AR.

In just a couple of weeks, more than 425 backers have helped Melbits POD to obtain more than €36,000. The project now has around 25 days remaining to achieve new stretch goals that will help the game to expand by adding new features and content.

One of the stretch goals already unlocked is the ability for Melbits POD to feature vibration to feel Melbits inside the toy and share your atmospheric weather with you in their hub. Further stretch goals include AR Runway, a photo mode in AR with which players can dress and take pics and videos with their Melbits in the real world.

Melbits POD will have its Kickstarter active until April 25th.
