Board gaming continues to dominate Kickstarter as sector grows 6.8 per cent

Kickstarter’s tabletop gaming category has grown more than 6.8 per cent over the past 12 months to total $176.5m pledged to successful campaigns on the crowdfunding platform.

The result has contributed to yet another year in which the sector has dominated the Kickstarter platform and paid a major contribution to the overall games category which last year earned more than $219m – up nearly nine per cent.

Games  – tabletop and video game inclusive – now account for 34 per cent of the backer revenue for Kickstarter.

The gaming category has continued to grow, with 433 more successful campaigns than the year prior, according to Polygon. Its total of 3,374 successful campaigns equates to a 13.1 pr cent increase for the category as a whole.

The latest data shows that the top ten campaigns in the tabletop category alone accounted for more than $31.5 million in funding. Of those, the highest yielding title of 2019 was Etherfields: Board Game from Awaken Realms, With a total of 32,582 backers, the tabletop title earned $5,215,793.

In second place was CMON’s Bloodborne: The Board Game which totalled $4,013,731, while the publisher’s Zombicide: Second Edition came in at number four with $3,410,084. It was beaten to third position by Cyanide and Happiness’ Trial by Trolley and its $3,538,065.

Party game specialists, Exploding Kittens came in at eight with its 2019 title Throw Throw Burrito which, through an audience of 52,643 backers, secured $2,559,458 in pledges.

More than this, the Kickstarter community has also continued to grow, with more than one million people having made pledges to games in 2019, up from around 868,000 in 2018.
