Hornby Hobbies celebrates award winning year for Chunkies, Airfix, Scalextric, and more

For Hornby Hobbies, the past 12 months have signalled somewhat of a return to form. Not only has the heritage British toy brand seen rising revenues and narrowing losses, but has made it a year of award winning brands across its portfolio.

Over the course of 2019, Hornby has managed scoop several award wins, from the Mum and Dad Choice Awards to the coveted Model Railway awards.

It was its brand Chunkies that won in this year’s Dad’s Choice Awards, as well as taking Gold in the Mum’s Choice Awards for Best Creative Play Toy. Hornby’s new collection of construction and emergency vehicles aimed at children aged three to six has also been awarded the recommended status by Fundamentally Children.

Kids can collect and play with up to 36 items included in the Chunkies 2019 range.

Meanwhile, Corgi took home a Commended Winner badge at the Dad’s Choice Awards, and received the Recommended Toy status from Fundamentally Children for its popular Paddington London Taxi Figure.

Airfix Quick Build is also a Dad’s Choice Award Commended Winner, the while the Quick Build VW Campervan won Bronze at the Mum’s Choice Awards for Best Construction Toy. The Red Arrows Hawk and Bugatti Veyron won Gold in the Dadsnet Toy Awards, and the BAE Hawk and Lamborghini Aventador have been awarded a Recommended Toy status by Fundamentally Children.

Airfix Quick Build is a range of snap together models suitable as an introduction to modelling for kids aged five and upwards, or as a bit of construction fun for the more experienced modeller. These models require no glue or paint, and the ‘flower power’ vehicles include a cool surfing sticker sheet.

Airfix Starter Sets have also had a good year, with the RAF Red Arrows Hawk being a Highly Commended Winner at the Dad’s Choice Awards, and the Boulton Paul Defiant was awarded a Recommended Toy status by Fundamentally Children.

Scalextric has had a successful award season, being kicked off with a Recommended Toy status by Fundamentally Children and a Gold award for Best Electric Toy for the new My First Scalextric set.

My First Scalextric is an introduction to the world of Scalextric, featuring an easy-to-assemble figure-of-eight track. This set is the ideal starting point for younger drivers aged three and upwards. The two sci-fi cars and adjustable power hand-controllers are colour coded in red and yellow to match chevrons on the circuit.

The Micro Scalextric Law Enforcer set has also been awarded Recommended Toy status by Fundamentally Children, and in 1:32 scale, Scalextric’s American Police chase set won bronze for the Best Toy eight to 11 years at the Mum’s Choice Awards, and Scalextric’s ARC Air World GT is a Highly Commended Winner at the Dad’s Choice Awards.

The Hornby Junior Paddington Bear Train set won gold for Best Toy four to seven years at Mum’s Choice awards, and Hornby won Manufacturer of the Year at the Hornby Magazine Model Railway Awards, as well as the Best ‘00’ Gauge Carriage for the Hornby Bulleid 59ft Corridor Stock.
