Nickelodeon and Paramount drop first trailer for the newest SpongeBob SquarePants movie

SpongeBob SquarePants is about to make his third big screen outing in a new feature film called The SpongeBob Movie 3: Sponge on the Run.

Nickelodeon dropped the first trailer for the third feature film last week, with the tagline ‘We’re not in Bikini Bottom anymore.’

Directed by Tim Hill, co-writer of the first SpongeBob SquarePants film, the film is scheduled for release on May 22, 2020. It will feature the usual voice cast, including Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown and Rodger Bumpass, and will feature a special guest appearance from Keanu Reeves.

SpongeBob made his big screen debut in 2004 with The SpongeBob Movie which went on to gross $140 million at the box office. The follow up movie, Sponge Out of Water didn’t hit cinemas until 2015, but grossed an impressive $325 million.

Last week, Nickelodeon also detailed it was re-instigating its partnership with Netflix to develop a portfolio of original series. It’s believed that a SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off series, centred on the character Squidward, is in the pipeline.
