Boris Johnson named among top pop culture costumes for Halloween in Beano survey

Clowns to the left of him, Jokers to the right, British PM Boris Johnson has found himself slap bang in the middle of a poll of the ghastliest figures of the 21st Century and Halloween dress-up favourites by UK children, according to a new survey conducted by Beano.

In a study of 2,000 British parents and their children aged six to 14, results indicate that over half (54 per cent) of British families are drawing direct inspiration from Brexit for their Halloween plans this year, with 28 per cent dressing up as British politicians, and 20 per cent using ‘Brexit’ decorations.

Eight in ten (82 per cent) British children have said that they now prefer modern and pop culture outfits for Halloween over traditional costumes such as ghosts, witches and vampires.

The research has revealed the top 20 topical Halloween outfit choices for 2019 which features Boris Johnson alongside modern pop culture favourites including IT 2’s Pennywise, The Joker and characters from Stranger Things and hit video game Fortnite.

Three of the Prime Minister’s now ‘iconic moments’, including Zipwire Boris, Biking Boris and Bullingdon Boris, have been recreated to inspire Halloween outfits this year, when Beano readers Jack Waterson (aged seven), Jamison McCarthy (aged 10) and Presley Kempson (also aged 10) took to Central London this month to test reactions to their costumes ahead of the big event this week.

Trumped only by the US President, Donald Trump, the survey revealed that Mr Johnson has also been identified as the second “scariest celebrity of 2019”, alongside political rivals including Jeremy Corbyn and Nigel Farage, as almost two thirds of kids (60 per cent) admit today’s politicians give them the heebie-jeebies.

Mike Stirling, editorial director of Beano Studios, said: “Kids today are far more clued up as to what’s going on in the world and with Brexit on everyone’s lips, it’s unsurprising that we’ll  be seeing a horde of mini Boris’ taking over the streets of the UK this Halloween, with a Jeremy Corbyn or two.”

To celebrate Halloween this year, visitors to Beano’s digital platform can transform the site into ‘Nightmare mode’ for a ‘spooktacular’ experience and watch videos covering tips, tricks, jokes and costume ideas to make 2019 the best Halloween ever.
