Mattel Films to develop Barney movie that will ‘surprise and subvert’

Mattel’s iconic purple dinosaur, Barney, is making a big screen comeback with a new, live-action motion picture in the works courtesy of Mattel Films.

The new title will be developed in partnership with the Academy Award nominated Daniel Kaluuya and his 59% banner, and Valparaiso Pictures.

“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” said Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner. “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining kids.”

Kaluuya, said: “Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood. We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”

This will be the latest Mattel IP to find itself the subject of a Hollywood interpretation, joining the likes of Barbie and Hot Wheels.
