The Topps Company has tapped pop culture specialists, Just Funky to develop a range of home goods and novelty products based on its retro revival Garbage Pail Kids brand.
Starting in 2020, Garbage Pail Kids enthusiasts will be able to purchase a wide variety of home goods and novelty products from partnering retailers across North America.
In 1985, when the Garbage Pail Kids first burst on the scene, the property spawned a worldwide collecting phenomenon. Pushing boundaries beyond the status quo, the strangely fun trading cards and stickers remained a staple form of entertainment for many years.
“Garbage Pail Kids is a nostalgic brand that Just Funky is thrilled to work with,” said Pranav Arora, head of division at Just Funky. “The unique imagery featured on the cards and stickers trigger fond recollections and resonate strongly to this day. We are so excited to be a part of that. With this opportunity, Just Funky will create a range of compelling products that will not only build off those cherished memories but will help develop innovative, new ones as well.”
In 2003, Garbage Pail Kids began making a strong comeback. Seeing this enthusiastic interest, Topps began developing more cards. Since then, new collections have been launched, while Topps reports that the excitement keeps on going.
More recently, Topps embarked on a coordinated, outbound merchandising program to broaden the ways in which fans can engage with the GPK brand.
