Tom Hanks to take on role of Mattel’s Major Matt Mason in another toy film adaptation

Tom Hanks is casting aside the cowboy hat so familiar from the Toy Story franchise and donning the space suit, this time to play the role of an astronaut in an entirely different, big bucks toy movie.

Amid the current Hollywood trend to adapt almost every toy brand into a blockbuster title, Mattel has plumbed the depths of its toy box to pluck out the vintage classic Major Matt Mason for a live-action movie.

Major Matt Mason is a popular series of action figures from the 1960s in which the titular hero and his team of space explorers as they navigated the depths of space and uncover the unknown. The toy line was inspired by realistic accounts of space from NASA findings.

By the time the toy line had hit the height of its popularity, it has taken on more a traditional sci-fi feel, and faced Mason off against an alien foe called Captain Lazer.

Hanks is tipped to not only star in the movie adaptation, but produce alongside Akiva Goldsman for Mattel and Paramount Pictures. According to Variety, Star Trek: {Picard showrunner, Michael Chabon’s short story about the character is providing inspiration for the script.

This is the second time Hanks has been linked with a Major Matt Mason project. Back in 2009, Hanks co-wrote a script for a 3D animated take on the character with Graham Yost, with plans to lend his voice to the character.
