Following the industry-wide success of his first volume, Owen Duffy, the lead author of The Board Game Book, is taking to Kickstarter to crowdfund money and awareness for the follow-up edition, The Board Game Book, Volume 2.
To be published by the specialist geek and gamers publishing house, Clyde & Cart Press, volume 2 will b compiled by a team of games journalists and will mark the second release in a planned annual series exploring the world of tabletop gaming.
The Board Game Book, Volume 2 will combine in-depth games criticism with studio photography and exclusive interviews with some of the world’s most innovative game designers.
The first Board Game Book met with a rave response on its release in May 2019, quickly selling out at the UK Games Expo in Birmingham, England. It also became the best-selling tabletop gaming book on Amazon UK and earned heavy praise from gaming media outlets.
Volume 2 will focus on the most exciting gaming releases of 2019-2020. Existing authors Owen Duffy, Matt Thrower and Richard Jansen-Parkes are joined by new contributors Anna Blackwell and Dan Jolin. Between them, the team’s work has appeared in outlets including The Guardian, BBC News, VICE, Empire, Tabletop Gaming Magazine, Shut Up & Sit Down, Wireframe and others.
The new edition will feature 100 per cent new content, with deeper coverage of everything from simple family and party games to complex strategy titles and roleplaying releases.
Editor, Owen Duffy said: “We were absolutely delighted with the reaction to The Board Game Book, Volume 1, and we’re looking forward to bringing fans the next edition in the series. It’s already been a fantastic year in the hobby, and we’ve really enjoyed new releases like Copenhagen, Treasure Island and Star Wars: Outer Rim.
“We’re keen that the book has something for all sorts of board game fans. If you’re just starting out in the hobby, there are some fantastic games for newer players. If you’re a bit more experienced, we cover lots of more advanced options. We want the book to be useful to folks whether they’ve been playing games for 10 years or 10 minutes.
“This time around we have an expanded group of contributors. They’re all massive game geeks, but what’s just as important is that they’re all compelling and entertaining writers who can communicate exactly why these games work so well.
“The support of our Kickstarter backers is the only reason we’re able to put a project like this together, and we’re immensely grateful that they’ve given us the chance to create this book and grow it as a yearly series.”
The Board Game Book, Volume 2 is live on Kickstarter now. Backers can pick up the hardcover edition for £20 or the PDF and eBook versions for £14. The book is set for release in May 2020, with copies delivered to backers before its public debut at the UK Games Expo.
