Hasbro’s Cluedo mansion to undergo renovation with Houzz campaign partnership

Colonel Mustard and the cast of Hasbro’s iconic board game, Cluedo will soon be enjoying a freshly renovated room, thanks to a new partnership with Houzz.

The global toy and board game company is teaming with the architecture and interior design specialists to update the classic Cluedo murder-mystery board game for its 70th anniversary, asking fans to vote on which Houzz photo will provide inspiration for the make-over.

From August 26 to September 9, fans and all those with an eye for interiors will be asked to vote on the renovation of the game’s hall, or indeed, if the hall should be replaced by a drawing room, bathroom, or bedroom.

Hasbro’s iconic gaming title has been at the centre of much licensing activity over the years, from books and movies to musicals. Tim Curry starred in the 1985 film based on the game, while, Ryan Reynolds is tipped to star in a modern remake.

70 years on from its launch in the UK, the game – now available in 30 countries around the world – is ready to undergo its first redesign in seven decades. The new design ideas from the Houzz team and its community of fans have potential to not only influence features on the board, but the game play itself.

“The room design helps tell the story of Cluedo through visual imagery,” said Hasbro senior game and product designer, Christopher Nelson. “Whichever design voters choose will serve as a thoughtful new backdrop against which the game’s always intriguing events will unfold.

“For example, the original hall had a broken statue. This element suggests that a struggle may have occurred and ties the murder mystery to the game board. Elements like this are hidden through the art.”

Houzz’s community will be able o vote for one of four photos, selected to fit the look and feel of Tudor Mansion – the game’s mansion house – while giving it a modern refresh.

“Whichever new room is chosen to take the hall’s place, Hasbro designers will study the inspiration design’s style and create matching mood boards for their illustration team to interpret,” said Houzz in a press release.

Kathleen Murray, senior creative manager games development, Hasbro, added: “Once the furniture placement is approved, the illustrator adds textiles, prints, textures and colour to the room. From these, we delve even further into the story by leaving Easter Eggs throughout the rooms. Perhaps you’ll find there’s a broken bottle, or maybe there’s a candlestick that’s out of place.”

The winning photo will be revealed in October, and the corresponding room design will be incorporated into the updated Cluedo game board by December this year.
