Toy retail duo find success in Grantham with latest store opening

A toy retail double act and founders of the East Midlands Toy Company’s string of successful toy shops, has seen a strong start for its fourth and newest store to join its growing fleet.

Wizard Toys became the latest site under James Colclough and Dave Westermen’s enterprise to open its doors, when it took up an empty unit in Isaac Newton Shopping Centre in Grantham this May.

The new store specialises in traditional and modern toys.

Westermen and Colclough went into business together back in 2009 when they were both made redundant from their jobs in retail. In 2009, the pair opened their Melton Mowbray site, expanding to Newark in 2013, and Bridlington in 2015.

The Grantham store marks the entrepreneurial partnership’s fourth site in the region.

Westermen, who live in Doncaster, told the Grantham Journal: “We felt that there was a gap in the market for independent toy shops and as we both had retail experience, we knew that we could do better.

“We looked at a number of towns but Grantham didn’t seem to have as many empty units compared to other towns, so it gave us a confident feeling.”

According to the pair, the store has been thriving since its opening in May this year.

Colclough said: “We went for a soft launch to get a feel for the town but we are planning competitions throughout the summer. Everyone has been supportive and the feedback has been really positive.

“Many people that we have spoken to have said that Grantham has been missing a traditional toy shop.”
