Hasbro’s Magic: The Gathering is getting its own Netflix animated series

Hasbro’s fantasy card game franchise, Magic: The Gathering is heading to a new home on Netflix, as plans get underway to develop the title into a new animated series.

The series Magic: The Gathering will feature a new storyline that expands on the game’s power-wielding heroes, called Planeswalkers in the latest extension of the franchise that was launched around 20 years ago by Wizards of the Coast.

The trading card game has already expanded into a digital format, a novel and a comic series, while more recently Hasbro detailed its plans to launch Magic: The Gathering into the esports space, tapping into a growing audience for the medium.

The Netflix series will be produced by Joe and Anthony Russo of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame fame. Both have said they are ‘huge fans and players’ of the game. Hasbro has also hired Henry Gilroy of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Jose Molina of The Trick as the series writers.

Since the announcement on June 2, Hasbro shares have posted big gains.
