Spiel des Jahres 2019 shortlisted titles revealed

The nominees for the Spiel de Jahres trophy, board gaming’s biggest award, have now been revealed, with the brimming party game scene striking a particular chord this year.

This year, the panel of German critics have pulled together a list of titles that lean towards the lighter end of the tabletop gaming spectrum, including the likes of the much lauded ornithological board game, Wingspan.

Among those shortlisted are Just One and Werwórter (Werewords in English), both of which are word-based party games. Meanwhile, LAMA is billed as a card-shedding game from the designer Reiner Knizia. All three games play in under 20 minutes.

The enthusiast category sees the likes of Carpe Diem from Stefan Feld, alongside Detective from Ignacy Trewiczek both join Wingspan in the line up.

Finally, the Kinderspiel des Jahres shortlist consists of Fabulantica, Go Gecko Go and Tal der Wikinger.

The jury’s list of recommended titles, meanwhile, consists of Berlatti, Dizzle, Imhotep – Das Duell, Krasse Kacke, Reef and Sherlock.

The winners of this year’s Spiel des Jahres will be announced later this year.
