Indonesian folktales and cultural narrative is being given a major platform at this year’s biggest tabletop gaming event, Essen Spiel 2018.
The aim is to promote the cross-cultural awareness to a wider European market. To do so, Badan Ekonomi Kreatif Indonesia, the Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy is presenting seven Indonesian board game publishers with around 24 board game titles.
The companies were administered in an open call process conducted by BEKRAF and the Indonesian Board Game Association.
As the world’s biggest board game convention, Essen Spiel 2018 – which kicks off today and runs until October 28th – will connect more than 1,000 board game publishers from around the world with nearly 200,000 potential buyers and game enthusiasts.
“By participating in this trade show, we strive to showcase the products of our local industries to more than 40 countries, thus leveraging Indonesia’s rich culture into creative works. This will significantly boost the country’s creative economy, that in 2017 contributed IDR 990.4 trillion, or accounted for 7.44 per cent of Indonesia’s GDP,” said Joshua Puji Mulia Simandjuntak, deputy chairman for marketing o fBEKRAF.
Among the eight titles being presented are Mahapatha, Orang Rimba: The Forest Keeper, Waroeng Wars 2nd, and Mahardika: Merah Putih.
Simandjuntak, added: “I would like to point out that in 2017, there were only 13 Indonesian board game products in Essen Spiel, but now we will have 24. We are optimistic that we will surpass the last year’s achievement.”
