Dungeons & Dragons is “ripe for global eSports competition,” says Hasbro CEO

Dungeons & Dragons, the fantasy role-playing board game is seeing its best year ever, Hasbro’s chairman and CO Brian Goldner has revealed.

In an interview with CNBC, Goldner stated that “people are more into Dungeons & Dragons today than ever before,” adding that players are “re-engaged with that brand because it’s a face to face game.”

“It’s immersive and it’s a game that people really enjoy playing with one another,” he added.

The interview followed an earlier announcement from Hasbro that it is planning a crossover between Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering this autumn, which stated that “gamers and fans are going to be very excited about what’s coming.”

A suite of digital games will follow to accommodate the modern gamer, while Goldner has underlined a goal over time to build fantasy games like Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering into eSports properties “ripe for global esports competition.”

Earlier this week Hasbro revealed a seven per cent dip in net revenue for Q2 compared to the same period last year. It pointed at the collapse of Toys R Us as the major factor, but said it was on track to overcome the retailer’s demise by 2019.
