Mattel celebrates Hot Wheels’ 50th with F1’s Nico Rosberg in race across London landmarks

Formula One World Champion, Nico Rosberg took on the challenge of a race across London’s most iconic landmarks to mark 50 years of Mattel’s high octane, Hot Wheels brand.

Onlookers in locations including Covent Garden and Marble Arch were treated to an appearance from Rosberg via projection mapping across Covent Garden as the F1 champion challenged two Hot Wheels cars to the race.

‘Challenge has been a core part of Hot Wheels’ DNA since its creation in 1968 and is partnering in its 50 year Hot Wheels globally with Nico Rosberg to embrace the thrill of challenge,’ read a statement from the Hot Wheels team.

The two diecast cars sped across the distinctive orange track, displayed across some of London’s famous architecture and the city skyline. The immersive digital spectacle used some of the brightest projectors on the market along with advance projection mapping tools to project the two cars’ race.

For the creation of the content, specialised projection mapping and motion artists textured two 3D manufacturing models to replicate Hot Wheels cars and track. The speed of the cars travelling through the city was also mirrored by the technology teams rapid live onsite mapping of 3D projection effects across Covent Garden, Marble Arch, Tate Modern, St Paul’s, Tower Bridge and the Shard.

Nico Rosberg, said: “Hot Wheels was my first introduction into racing when I was a little boy, and it’s where my love for cars and racing began. In my new role as a member of the Hot Wheels team, I hope to inspire kids to take on all challenges, and to compete, create and experiment with their favourite Hot Wheels cars.”
